Being ThereGetting in

  • Do you have a ramp at the entrance?

  • Is the door easy to open?

  • Could a person onm crutches or who uses a wheelchair or even a parent with a pram move freely in the space?

  • Ideally, remove dangerous obstacles such as advertising boards, displays or furniture from the entrance so that people who use wheelchairs, older people or people with vision impairment do not have to risk falling over them.

  • If you are permitted to have advertising boards, display items or furniture outside your business, make sure there is a clear pathway leading to the entrance.

  • If possible make sure there are clear sight lines betwee the entry and the counter so that staff are aware when a person needs asistance to enter the premises or purchase goods.

Down at the local tavern where I use to go for a drink there was no accessibility. I would have to wait outside for someone to open the door for me. There was no service at all. They would whinge and carry on when they had to bring the drink back to the table for me, I would have to ask patrons to move a chair if one was in the way and then, I would have to wait for someone to let me out of the place! Sometimes I would sit there for15 minutes like a puppy dog waiting for someone to come and open the door!

When people ask ‘where is the best place to go I tell them ‘if you want to go somewhere with good service and a friendly atmosphere go up road to the club’. You feel comfortable at the club because the atmosphere is welcoming and the staff all say hello. Accessibility is brilliant, there are ramps very where even when you go into the pokies area the ramp is tapered, access to outside areas is great because it is all flat. There are accessibility toilets at both ends! Dining and the other end! They looked at it smartly from the beginning.
